Course description:

Allen College offers the Adult Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Track of the MSN program master’s degree in response to the growing need for specialists who can provide comprehensive psychiatric-mental health nursing care to adults who are at risk for mental illness, as well as those who are in need of psychiatric services. The APMHNP Track, one of only two offered in the state of Iowa , has been developed in response to a well-documented, serious shortage of mental health practitioners in Iowa , especially psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners in Iowa .

Entry requirements:

A bachelor's degree with a major in nursing from a school accredited by the appropriated regional accrediting organization. A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. Current licensure as a registered nurse in Iowa. Individuals are currently licensed when licensed in another state and recognized for licensure in Iowa pursuant to the nurse licensure compact contained in Iowa Code chapter 152E. The Admissions Office will verify the status of each applicants RN licensure. Minimum of one-year clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse is required for clinical course enrollment. Courses in statistics and nursing research at the baccalaureate level. Computer literacy. Three professional/academic letters of reference. A biographical sketch. A statement of personal and professional goals. Score of at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for foreign-born students.Copy of current CPR certification card. Applicants for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program must also have completed ACLS and have recent acute care experience (within the past two years) prior to enrolling in their first clinical course.

Applications are considered once the applicant's file is complete. Graduate students are admitted in the fall and spring for beginning coursework in the subsequent semester.
