I am currently in the second year of my PhD program at the Nicholas School of Environ ent and Earth Sciences, Duke University. My area of research is Environment and Natural Resource Economics. Duke is undoubtedly among the best research universities in the US.
The university gets a lot of research grant and almost all PhD students are fully funded through fellowships or teaching/research assistantship. Students in the masters program, however, are typically not funded.
The school of Environment & Earth Science offers a very interdisciplinary program, which gives students the opportunity to work closely with experts in their field but at the same time also learn from colleagues in other areas of natural science or social science. Students doing the Environmental Economics and Policy track take several courses in the economics department, the business school and the school of public policy. Further, students at Duke University can take courses at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. Besides the School of Environment, the department of Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology and molecular genetics are highly ranked in the US. The Duke medical school and the Fuqua School of business are also among the best in the US. The tuition fees and other university fees are quite high compared to other schools.
Students typically stay off-campus because there are many inexpensive housing options available. The Duke transit system is very good and there is a late night van service that offers rides to students from any building on campus to their apartments between 6pm and 6am. Many students in masters programs are usually able to find on-campus jobs to support their living expenses. The city of Durham however, does not have much to offer. One generally needs to go to Raleigh or Chapel Hill for restaurants and other social activities. There are some hidden gems that need to be discovered in Durham and they are slowly trying to develop the downtown area.
Located in North Carolina.
