Where education is concerned I am really satisfied with the system over here in the US. It deals with teaching with a more practical and application point of view rather than just reading paragraphs from a book. The most common misinterpretation is that studying in the US is easier than studying back in India. In my experience it is actually much more work than I expected it to be.
I applied to around eight universities and from them I got admission in Two. One I just considered a back-up and the other is CMU, the one I am going to right now. I should say I am lucky to get into CMU since it is one of the best for my field of study. I had taken help for my admissions and VISA from a consultant. Though I got help, the process is really long and the wait is dreadful but its all worth it and that is one thing a student has to face. The VISA is the scariest procedure before I was actually in the consulate. People build up hype about getting the VISA. Honestly it was the smoothest of everything, although preparing for it was the most painful.
My course is Electrical and computers engineering. The hours of lectures per week depends on the number of courses you take so it variable. The professors here are very helpful except that you have to take an appointment to talk to them but otherwise they'll help in every way possible.
The facilities are state of the art. There are lots of big cities near by and having my brother working here in Pittsburgh was a boon. I made friends easily and made initial inroads through my brother's circle. I enjoy the outdoors and therefore make fun trips close by. Rafting in the fall was amazing. I live with my brother and cost of living is cheap compared to other major cities. The societies and clubs are good and numerous. They do organize fun activities time and time again. We have visited lots of cities by road during my first semester.
I do believe my job prospects have increased as a result of my studies. I absolutely will try to keep in touch with alumni. Having the right connections are very important in your career life.
